Acts Chapter 13

The church at Antioch had now become a headquarters of sorts for the early church. It was from this location that Saul and Barnabas were sent out from the church to reach others with the gospel of Jesus Christ. The task was given by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and it would be called the first missionary journey.

Let's Reflect

1. What were the church people doing when they heard the Holy Spirit give them direction?

2. Saul, Barnabas and John (john Mark) went to the island of Cyprus. They first began teaching in the synagogues of the Jews. They continued sharing the gospel throughout the whole island and came to Paphos. At Paphos there was a man named Bar-jesus who was a false prophet to the Jews. He asked for Saul and Barnabas to come and teach him. The Bible said he was an intelligent man. He was seeking absolute truth. But another man was also there and was interfering. What was this man’s name and what was he known for?

3. Saul recognized the working of the devil inside this man, and he told him the hand of the Lord was upon him. What happened to this man? Because of this occurrence and the teaching of the Word, Bar-jesus became a believer.

4. Paul (Saul) and Barnabas went on to Perga and then returned to Antioch and began to preach the gospel. John Mark did not travel with them. At the synagogue Paul was invited to speak encouraging words to the people. Paul rehearsed the history and prophecy of the Old Testament in his gospel message. What did Paul relay to the people that was very important for them to understand? See verse 26.

5. Why had the Jews been wrong about Jesus?

6. Paul explained that while the law served a purpose to convict people of their sins. But what was it that was impossible for the law to provide for people that only Jesus could provide? See verse 39.

7. The people were hungry to hear more of the truths of the gospel. What did they ask of Paul and Barnabas?

8. The next time Paul and Barnabas spoke, at the next Sabbath, how many people came to hear them?

9. Jewish religious leaders were jealous of the popularity of the apostles. They tried to contradict what Paul was saying. Paul became bolder. He told them because of their resistance to the truth, the gospel would go out to whom?

10. What did the Gentile people in the audience do when they heard this news?
