Many people of this world do not understand Christians when they say that they have been born-again. Paul explains quite eloquently in this chapter the new life that is ours when we give our life to Christ. There is more than just raising a hand in church to the salvation experience, but it is the beginning of a new life with Christ as a person makes the decision to allow their old self to be buried with Christ and to put on the new life Christ offers through the power of His resurrection and through His great forgiveness.
Let's Reflect
1. We could call this chapter, “Instructions for Living”. The first thing Paul teaches us about living is to recognize that our old life is dead. We are no longer held captive by the sin of this world. We are forgiven and we are free not to sin. What are some sins that once held us captive?
2. You may read that list in verse 5 and think that you never did any of those things, but before Christ we were all under the curse of sin and those sins plagued all of us in one form or another. Because of these sins and other sins that Paul names in the following verses (verses 8-9), what is coming, according to verse 6?
3. As believers we still sin and will continue to do so until we reach glory. But when we accepted Jesus, we made a commitment to follow Him. We saw the peace, freedom and forgiveness He offered us at that moment of salvation. To continually put on the new man, we must daily do something that will keep our focus on Him and leave our old self behind. What do we need to do according to verse 10?
4. People talk all the time about how we can solve our differences in this country. The answer is right in front of them. Salvation is offered to everyone, there is no distinguishing between people groups with God. In salvation there is offered something to everyone that takes away all of these binding forces. What is it according to verse 11?
5. Back in verse 2, Paul tells us where our minds need to dwell. What do we think about as believers?
6. As we think on those things in verse 2 a natural result will be that we will want to put on the new man. It’s like putting on brand new clean clothes. What are some characteristics of the believer who has put on the new man?
7. There is so much to be thankful for as we reflect on what we have in Christ. This brings about peace in our hearts. There Is nothing better than to be a peace. What are some natural reactions to feeling the peace of God?
8. Part of the Christian Walk that is so important is to be in unity with other believers. But we also need to be a people who live peaceably with those around us. What 3 examples did Paul end the chapter with of relationships that will testify outwardly of our love for Christ?
