Deuteronomy Chapter 16

When things are going well in life we often forget about the one that caused our blessings to occur.  We forget about God.  There was going to be a lot of good things given to the children of Israel and times of wealth that they had never known.  God instituted feasts of celebrations to help them remember that it was He who had blessed them so greatly.

In Numbers 28:16-19 we find that other sacrifices took place coinciding with the Passover sacrifice which would explain why in verse 2 of our reading in Deuteronomy they were told to bring their sacrifices from the flock and the herd.  The Passover Celebration or Commemoration was a very important feast.  It was not only a memorial of the redemption of Israel from Egyptian slavery, but it was a time of repentance and commitment to God.  The Passover celebration was an affirmation of the covenant God made with Israel.

Whether we are celebrating a holiday or a loved one’s birthday, all of our celebrations as believers should be a cause to remember how good God has been to us.

Let's Reflect

1.  What special type of bread did the Israelites eat for 7 days while celebrating the Passover to help them remember that they had to leave Egypt quickly?

2.  What was to take place on the seventh day of the Passover celebration?

3.  How many weeks after first starting to harvest their grain in the fields would they celebrate the Feast of Weeks?

4.  What did the Feast of Weeks help the Israelites to commemorate?

5.  What did the Feast of Booths commemorate?

6.  According to verse 15, why will all the people of Israel be joyful?

7.  According to verses 18-22 what other institutions did God command so that they could live peaceful and joyful lives in the promised land?
