Various laws are discussed in this chapter. There are laws that govern how people should treat their neighbor, and laws which instructed how family members should treat each other. These laws were meant to set Israel apart from other nations, cultures, and practices.
Let's Reflect
1. What should an Israelite do if he found an animal or an item belonging to some fellow Israelite (a brother)?
In ancient Bible times men and women wore similar clothes. They both wore long robe type garments but there was a distinction in the length that set the genders apart. The women’s garments were much longer than the men’s. And there were other differences as well. God wants us to honor the two genders that He created; a man should not dress to look like a woman and vice-a-versa. This is not a law that forbids the two genders from wearing clothes that are somewhat similar, but it is a law that states that clothing should not blur the distinction between men and women.
2. What did God say about those men who try to dress like a woman or those women who try to dress like a man?
3. Additionally, the Israelites were instructed to add tassels to the bottom of their garments. How many tassels were added? “A symbolic meaning is given to these tassels in Numbers 15:37-41, namely that they are a reminder to Israel to keep God’s law.” [Thompson]
4. God also wanted people to treat animals with kindness. What example is given in this passage of kindness to animals?
5. The people were instructed when building their homes to include a parapet or railing on their flat rooftops. Why was this law written?
6. God also set a law regarding the seed they planted in the field. The pagan cultures thought they could combine seeds and create magical crops. What was the law for planting seeds for the Israelites?
7. Verses 13-30 are laws about sexual relations. The topics include infidelity, sexual interactions before marriage, rape and incest. All these laws were meant to stop and prevent such destructive acts from happening. The end of verse 22 sums up why God put these laws in place for His people. What was the purpose?
