It has been said by many preachers that there are far more verses in the Bible about hell and the fury of God’s judgement on those who reject Him, than there are those verses that describe heaven and the eternal home of those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ our redeemer. The same was true for Israel. There were far more warnings given to His people for the curses or judgements that they would receive if they did not obey His voice than there were words of His blessings which He wanted to bestow on them. Why is that we should ask? It is because God knows our hearts and our hearts are desperately wicked. We need a God who is willing to not only warn us about our wicked hearts but a God who would do something about it. And He did.
Let's Reflect
1. In the very first verse of this chapter what did God promise Israel if they would obey all of His commandments?
2. There were additional blessings that Israel would enjoy, blessings we call material blessings. What blessings do you see that speak to your heart?
3. According to verse 10 how would the world view Israel, the Israel that kept all of God’s commandments?
4. The Lord wanted to bless Israel with more than just a few blessings. Imagine being in the crowd of Israel and hearing the words of the Lord telling your people how He wants to bless you. According to verse 12 how much did God want to bless them?
5. Verses 13 and 14 describes the conditions for receipt of God’s blessings. What was God’s conditions?
6. Verse 15 through the end of the chapter begins the warnings of curses or judgements that would fall on the people of Israel for their disobedience. Oh, how it breaks the heart of God when we disobey His voice. But God gave man a free will and a choice to choose how we live our lives. Of the curses listed, which do you think was the curse that would have broken them? Which curse do you think would have made them realize they had sunk to the lowest?
7. According to verse 58, when do people truly fear the LORD God?
