Deuteronomy Chapter 30

As Israel stood at the face of two mountains, Mt. Gerizim and Mt. Ebal, Moses delivered a plea to the people asking them to choose life.  In choosing life under the old covenant, it meant that the people were listening to the words of the LORD and following after it with their whole heart.  They were choosing to submit to the authority of the one who had set them apart from all other nations.  This would be the circumcision of their heart.  A heart dedicated to the LORD God.

Just as there were two mountains that Moses could point to as he spoke to the people, there were two choices.  Moses under the Spiritual influence of God knew that Israel would choose to disobey God and they would go after other gods, and this would lead to the curses and to death.  This was not necessarily an immediate death, but the people would be taken captive at a future date by the Assyrians and by the Babylonians.  Moses asked them to remember the promises of God that when they were held captive that if they repented God would restore them to their homeland.  This was partially fulfilled during the times of Ezra and Nehemiah, but it would not be until our modern times that Jews would return home from all nations of the earth.

Today there are many Messianic Jews (believers), but we are still waiting for the nation to turn its heart to accept Jesus as their Messiah and Savior.  Perhaps it will be very soon.

Let's Reflect

1.  According to verse 2 how does any person obey the voice and commands of God?

2.  Moses asked the Israelites to remember the promises of God at a future date when they were in a terrible state.  What was the terrible state in the future?

3.  According to verse 7 who will seek revenge on those nations who persecuted the Jewish people?

4.  According to verse 9 what does God take delight in doing for the nation of Israel when they love and obey Him?

5.  The choice should have been an easy choice.  The people should have always wanted to choose life and the blessings of the LORD.  According to verse 14 what had God given them to remind them what they should do when faced with choices?

6.  According to verse 18 if they chose to let their hearts be drawn away to worship and serve other gods, how long would they get to enjoy the promised land?

7.  What did Moses want for the people of Israel?
