Exodus Chapter 11

The Pharaoh of Egypt was like many people who in our culture today will say that there are many religions and many ways to worship and it doesn’t matter which god you worship.  On the contrary there is a big difference between the many gods of Egypt and the God of the Israelites.  And even in the face of 9 miracle signs that brought such devastation, this man was still not willing to bow his knee to Yahweh.

The people of Egypt could see the difference between their gods and Yahweh.  In fact, the Bible states in verse 3 that the servants of the Pharaoh and the people found Moses to be a very great man.  Their eyes were opened to the power of Yahweh through his servant representative Moses.

Let's Reflect

1. Look back at Exodus chapter 4:21-23.  What did God tell Moses prior to his ever arriving in Egypt, that would happen before the Pharaoh would let the Israelites go?

2. What instruction did Moses give the Israelites to ask of the people of Egypt who had grown fearful of Moses?

3. You will recall that in the last chapter the Pharaoh had issued a threat to Moses that if he were to show his face again that he would be a dead man.  Moses did return and announced the 10th and final plague while standing in the darkness of the 9th plague. God told Moses exactly what to say to this evil Pharaoh.  Those words are found in verses in verses 4-8.  The final demonstration of God’s power is the death of the firstborn of every household including the Pharaoh’s.  At what time of day will these deaths occur?

4. What would happen to the Israelites according to verse 7?

5. What did Moses say would happen in verse 8 once these massive number of Egyptians had died?

6. Those words that Moses spoke in verses 4-8 were not just an announcement, but were delivered by Moses who was feeling what emotion?

7. What does the Bible say about the Pharaoh despite having seen the power of Yahweh demonstrated several times and the coming judgement just pronounced by Moses?
