Exodus Chapter 15

Imagine how elated the Israelites felt when they finally took a breath realizing that they were actually free from the tyranny of the Egyptians.  God had really done it; He had rescued them.  There was once again laughter and singing and dancing.  God had saved their lives, and He had taken out their evil captors.  Much of this chapter is the spontaneous songs they sang to the Lord.  We know that the Lord treasures the songs we sing in His honor because He included them in the Scriptures.

Verses 1-21 were the beautiful words that they put together as they walked away from the Red Sea and walked toward the Promised Land.  Exodus 15:13You have led in your steadfast love the people who you have redeemed; you have guided them by your strength to your holy abode.” (to Mt. Zion)  Their God was taking them home.

Let's Reflect

1. Part of their song included what God had done to the Egyptians that pursued them.  The words speak of the strength of their God vs. the strength of the great Egyptian army.  How did they describe God causing the deaths of their enemy?

2. The enemy was prepared to fight them and take them back with a sword.  What did God use to destroy the Egyptians according to verse 10?

3. The people had just come from living as slaves in a country that worshipped many gods.  What did they say in verse 11 about their God?

4. The words of verses 15 and 16 are prophetic as they sang about how other nations would fear them as they passed by.  Why would they fear the Israelites?

5. Verse 20 tells us that Aaron (and Moses’) sister Miriam was there, and she was also a prophetess.  What did she do while they were singing and other women followed after her?

6. As they set out across the dessert climate (the wilderness of Shur) the Bible says they could not find any water.  This lasted for three days.  That’s a long time to be without water.  When they did find water, what was wrong with it?

7. The people grumbled, as would I without water to drink in a hot climate.  God performed another miracle through his leader Moses.  What was the miracle?

8. God spoke to the people asking them to trust Him and He would take care of them.  What did God say He would do for them because He is the Lord, their healer?  Jehovah Rapha – the Lord your healer.

9. Read verse 27 and just try to imagine how relaxed the people must have felt at this beautiful spot God had led them to.  How is the place described?
