Exodus Chapter 2

In this chapter we are introduced to one of the patriarchs of the faith, Moses.  We learn that Moses was born to Hebrew parents from the descendants of Levi.  His parents were named in Exodus 6 - Amram and Jochebed.  We also learn that it was not his parents that named him Moses, but the daughter of the Pharoah.

Jochebed no doubt prayed to God as she placed her little baby boy in the river in a basket.  She stepped out in faith that God would somehow intervene and protect her little one.  Pharoah wanted all Hebrew male babies killed but God had a different plan.  A plan that would lead to the deliverance of the Hebrew people.

Let's Reflect

1. For how long did Jochebed hide her little one before putting him in the river in a basket?

2. Who kept watch over the basket to see what would happen to the baby?

3. The Pharoah’s daughter obviously knew about the order that had been set forth to kill all Hebrew baby boys.  But the crying of a little baby had melted her heart, and she decided in that moment to rescue him.  What happened next to the baby?

4. During the younger years of Moses life, Jochebed must have instilled in her son the truth of who he was and the truth of the God they worshipped because when he was older, he showed that he knew who he was.  Jochebed gave up her son to be raised in the house of the Pharoah.  That must have been so difficult for her, but she knew she was giving her son a better life.  He would have been educated by the best educators and given the wealth of the Egyptians.  What does verse 10 say about how the Pharoah’s daughter thought of the child?

5. When Moses was grown, he saw one of the Hebrew people being beaten.  What did he do about it?

6. Why did Moses have to escape the Pharoah’s house and go to the land of Midian?

7. While we know that God had a plan for the life of Moses, Moses was not ready to be the leader God wanted him to be.  While it may appear that Moses had ducked out of the plan for a few years, we know that God was using those years to make Moses into the man he wanted him to be.  Moses would be a leader of the Hebrews not by his own strength and Egyptian training but by God’s leading.  Moses got married and had his own son.  We all know that becoming a parent does a lot to mature a person.  What was Moses’s son’s name?

8. The Hebrew people were in terrible conditions, and the Bible says they began to cry out to God.  It is at this juncture that God begins to put His plan into motion.  God heard the prayers of groaning of His people.  And God was going to act upon His covenant promise.  Who did God make the promise to?
