Exodus Chapter 21

As we look back to this time in Biblical history, we need to consider that modern conveniences we have today such as banking systems and courtroom law were nonexistent.  When we read the word slave in the Bible our instinct is to think of slavery in the sense we are familiar with here in America.  In a way the Bible is talking about that kind of cruel slavery, but this chapter is referring more to what we would call indentured servants.  We must remember that God had just rescued the Israelites from slavery.  A man became a servant to another man when he owed a debt he could not pay.  But even in this system of indentured servitude God set up rules and limitations.

This chapter and the following couple of chapters define rules or judgements that God put forth for men to follow.  Many of these are for those “what if” situations.  For example, “what if a man’s ox gores another man’s ox and it kills the ox, what should be done?”  God supplied the judgements for those occasions that were difficult to know what was fair and just.  God made the rules and judgements for men and women to live by.

Let's Reflect

1. What is the first protection God set for a servant as seen in verse 2?

2. When a poor man sold his daughter as a servant to another man it was in hopes that she would be married into the family.  If the man did not want her as a wife for himself then he might give her to his son.  And how should the father then treat that female servant?

3. If a man gets in a fight with another man and he accidentally kills that man, what did God say would happen?

4. There are two verses regarding respect for your parents.  Both verses tell us that the judgement for actions against a parent would result in death.  What were the actions against a parent that were punishable by death?

5. Verse 16 should really help us understand that God is not promoting slavery as we think of slavery in America.  What did God say about this topic?

6. Verse 20 is more protection for a slave (servant).  What treatment of slaves did God say was punishable?

7. God also set up rules for the care of their animals.  What animal besides the ox is mentioned in this passage?
