The Pharaoh of Egypt had previously said, “Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, and moreover, I will not let Israel go.” The Pharaoh was not willing to acknowledge the one true God. Since he would not listen to God, God was going to send Moses as his messenger to speak as his representative. Aaron the older brother of Moses would act as a prophet speaking on behalf of Moses. God was once again showing great mercy to Moses who had given excuses as to why he was not the right man for the job. God was saying - despite your lack of faith, my plan still remains, and I will do a mighty work through you and your brother.
Let's Reflect
1. God told Moses ahead of time that the signs and wonders shown to the Pharaoh would be ineffective. In fact, the very first sign was duplicated by Pharaoh’s men. What type of men were they and how did they recreate a miracle sign from God?
2. What was the purpose of these miracle signs? See verse 5 and verse 17.
3. How old were Moses and Aaron when they began their assignment?
4. We can almost picture this man, the Pharaoh, laughing and scoffing saying that he was not going to let the Israelites go anywhere. What did God say to Moses about the Pharoah in verse 14.
5. The first plague that God brought on the Egyptians was the plague of their water turning to blood. Notice that it was not just the Nile River that would be turned to blood. What else would be turned to blood?
6. What does verse 21 say about how extensive this miracle sign was in Egypt?
7. The Pharaoh’s magicians were able to duplicate this. Most likely they only turned a small vessel of water to blood color, but it was enough that the Pharaoh hardened his heart. In fact, it says in verse 23 that his attitude was what?
8. How long did the Egyptians have to suffer without clean water to drink?
