Genesis Chapter 19

Just as God had told Abraham He would do; God destroyed the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. There had not been 10 righteous people found in the city, but God in His great mercy did spare the lives of Abraham’s nephew Lot and his wife and two daughters.

Lot and his family had lived amongst these heathen people for years and it began to show. The first thing we notice is that Lot did not recognize the visitors to be anyone special but just thought them to be regular men. Secondly, we see that he cared more about his own reputation when it came to the protection of the visitors than he cared about his own two daughters. And third we see that Lot had not been a spiritual leader for his wife and daughters that they so desperately needed.

Let's Reflect

1. Lot offered the customary hospitality of the day to the two visiting angels. Why did Lot insist that they stay at his house?

2. Had the visitors entered Lot’s home unnoticed by the other people of the city?

3. Lot’s house was soon surrounded by people who wanted to have the two men (angels) come out so they could “know them” (have sexual relations). What gender of people surrounded Lot’s home?

4. In the previous chapter we learned that the wickedness of these two cities had reached the ears of God. Yes, God already knew all about their sin, but apparently other spiritual beings perhaps angels and probably taunting fallen angels were talking about the terrible wickedness occurring with the people of these cities. According to verse 13 what did the angels tell Lot that God was about to do?

5. Lot tried to warn his two future sons-in-law and to include them in the rescue, but what did they do?

6. How soon did the judgement of the cities happen? See verse 15.

7. Did Lot want to leave his home?

8. Why did the angels grab Lot and his family by the hand and make them leave? See verse 16.

9. How did God destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah?

10. We know that Lot’s wife did not make it, she disobeyed the instructions given and looked back. Only Lot and his two daughters escaped. Here we learn how spiritually empty his family was. What did his daughters do even though Lot had previously said they had never been with a man?
