As we begin to read the second chapter we are given a few more details of God’s creation. God created life on this planet, and He did so magnificently. My favorite detail of the creation is that God breathed into Adam His very own breath and man became a living creature. This is the foundational truth that we want the world to see – God created us, and we were given His own breath. Each and every person is valuable to God.
My second favorite thing about God’s creation is that He created a woman from the rib out of the side of Adam. Adam had the best anesthesia ever since God put him to sleep while He opened his flesh and removed a rib and closed up his flesh again. I think when Adam woke up not only did he see that Eve was there now to keep him company, but I think he had a scar on his chest to remind him of the gift God had given him, a helpmate.
The third favorite thing is that God rested on the seventh day thereby establishing a pattern of six days of work and then a day of rest. God was not tired; He simply did not create any more on the seventh day. God knew that we were going to need to rest. Rest is important for our bodies.
Let's Reflect
1. What did God declare about the seventh day since He was finished with all of His creation?
2. Chapter 1 described to us the creation of the heavens or atmosphere around our earth. This atmosphere was a beautiful water vapor. In verse 6 we have the detail that atmosphere surrounding earth caused a mist to lightly water all the vegetation. What important detail do we learn from verse 5 regarding the watering of vegetation?
3. Here is another truth that we need to get ahold of. When man was created, God did so in one day, day six. The Word tells us that God breathed into what, of this man and he was then alive?
4. God put Adam in the garden of Eden to have food to eat. This garden must have produced all kinds of wonderful food. The trees and plants were beautiful to look at and they were good to eat from. There was only one tree that was off limits to eat from. What was the tree and what would happen if Adam ate from this tree?
5. Most Bible scholars believe that Genesis as well as the next four books were written by Moses. God’s Spirit filled Moses with all the words that he needed to record about the creation. And to that point Moses recorded for us a generality of where the garden of Eden was located. What do we know about the garden’s location from verses 10-14?
6. Adam was created to be an eternal being. When did death begin?
7. We see that Adam was a super intelligent man. He was given a great task. What was that task? See verses 19-20.
8. When God created Eve from a rib of the side of Adam her husband, what important foundation did God establish between a husband and his wife?
