Genesis Chapter 40

Joseph was put into prison falsely accused by the wife of Potiphar.  He was put into the prison of the king of Egypt or the Pharoah.  It wasn’t long before the keeper of the prison noticed that Joseph was an upstanding young man, and he put him in charge of running his prison.  The Bible indicates that some time had passed, and he was asked to watch over newly imprisoned servants of the Pharoah, his cup bearer that brought the Pharoah his wine and his baker that cooked his food.  We don’t know what the offenses were of these two men, but God caused their paths to meet up with Joseph.

Let's Reflect

1.   Verses 3 and 4 tell us who it was that set Joseph in charge of these two new prisoners.  It was the same man who put Joseph in prison.  Who was that man?

2.   Both the cupbearer and the baker each had a dream on the same night.  When they told each other their dream, neither man knew what it meant.  Joseph noticed that these two looked downcast the next morning and they told Joseph they had each had a dream but didn’t know what they meant.  What was Joseph’s response?

3.   The cupbearer was the first to tell his dream and Joseph told him what it meant.  The meaning of the dream presented a favorable outcome for the cupbearer.  Joseph asked him to do him a favor when he was released from the prison.  What was the favor?

4.   The baker then shared his dream with Joseph, also hoping for a favorable interpretation as well.  What did Joseph tell the baker would happen to him?

5.   What was the occasion that the Pharoah released his cupbearer and his baker from prison?

6.  They were released from prison three days after their crazy dreams.  Were the interpretations of the dreams correct?

7.   It was just three days, but somehow the butler (or chief cupbearer) “forgot” about Joseph.  Joseph’s release from prison would not happen at this time.  God had other plans.  What do you imagine Joseph felt when he realized his release from the prison was not going to happen?
