Genesis Chapter 6

We can not imagine a world where people lived to be 800 or 900 years old, but we can imagine a world where the wickedness of man had reached a point where God would say that it is time to destroy the earth and all its inhabitants. It seems we are getting closer and closer to that day. Thankfully God in His great mercy and love, is still allowing time for people to repent and come to Him for their salvation.

We learn that the sons of God came and took the daughters of men as wives. The term “sons of God” is believed to be angelic beings, fallen angels. Bible scholars believe that Satan had a plan to corrupt the gene pool is such an evil way that no daughter of mankind would be able to give birth to the redeemer as promised in Genesis 1:15. This was not supposed to happen in God’s order. Demons were not to mate with humans, this was unnatural sex, just as the evil perpetrated at Sodom and Gomorrah was called unnatural.

Jude 1:5-7Now I want to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that Jesus, who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day— just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

The demonic angels that caused this great atrocity are kept in chains to this day awaiting their final judgement of the lake of fire. Satan thought he had gotten away with corrupting the human race, but there was one man who remained faithful to God – Noah.

Let's Reflect

1. According to verse 3, how long would it be before the judgement of the great flood would wipe out all humans on the earth?

2. There was an unusual race of people born to the demons and the daughters of men, they were giants. What is the name in the Bible for these evil giants?

3. God knew ahead of time that this wickedness of man was going to happen but still it grieved Him to His ___________. Our sin grieves the ___________ of God.

4. One man found favor in the eyes of the Lord. In verse 9 we learn that “Noah was a righteous man, blameless before his generation.” Does this mean that he was perfect? What unique thing did Noah do that apparently the rest of the inhabitants of the earth had stopped doing?

5. God let Noah in on His plan of judgement. He may not have exactly understood how the judgement would happen because until this point in time, it had not rained. Noah clearly understood his directions to construct an ark. This was going to be a huge task. What dimensions did God give him to build this great ark? [If you ever get the chance to come to Kentucky, make sure you visit the replica of Noah’s Ark. It will leave a huge impression on your mind that you will never forget.]

6. Besides all of the animals that Noah would bring on the ark and also his sons and their wives, what else did God instruct Noah to take on the ark?

7. What does the last verse of this chapter tell us that Noah did?
