I Timothy Chapter 4

A lot of things happening in our world today can be explained by reading scripture. That is to say, that there are many who are being deceived by false teachings just as Paul described. He warned Timothy and the readers of his letter, that the Spirit of God had told that such things would happen. Does that mean that we are at the end of time? We cannot say conclusively that we are because Jesus told us that no man knows the day or the hour that He will return. What we can say is that the “later times” had begun some time ago and continues on. It certainly appears as if we are nearing the end of time on earth as the wickedness of man and the prevalence of demonic forces increases exponentially.

An example of departing from the faith in our world today is the inclusivity of homosexuality in the church. The Bible clearly teaches that this is a sin, yet there are many churches that are embracing the sin. If we are to follow the example of Jesus, the church would reach out to the sinner and love them, but clearly take a stand against the sinful act of homosexuality. There are even some churches that have allowed a homosexual pastor to lead their church. They are departing from the faith - which are the truths of scripture. There are many other examples we could name of people today who are being mis-led by leaders who are seeking power, popularity and money. This is why it is so important that we know what the Bible says.

Let's Reflect

1. The prophetic named time period of the “later days” began once Christ ascended to heaven. What were two examples Paul named of false teaching in his day?

2. Timothy had a tough job; he was a young man and it would take a lot to gain the respect of those who were to follow him. What is the greatest advice Paul gave to Timothy regarding his training that would help Timothy in his leadership role?

3. Paul said that bodily exercise had some value, but even more valuable was the training he was referring to. The value of the training holds a promise. What is the promise?

4. Even though Timothy was a young pastor at the church in Ephesus, there was a Godly stamp put on His life. Timothy had been given a gift from God of teaching and exhortation of the scriptures. What had Paul and other godly men done in the past, in recognition of the gift Timothy had been given?

5. What would Timothy need to continually do to earn the respect of his church?

6. What do you think Paul meant by “keeping a close watch on yourself?” How does this relate to your life?
