I Chronicles Chapter 22

Please read:  I Chronicles 22

David had purchased the threshing floor from Ornan, and he knew that since God accepted his sacrifice of repentance on the altar built there, that this would be the location where the temple would be built in Jerusalem.  David had already been told by the LORD that he would not build it, but his son would.  He made it his mission to do all that he could to bring together the materials and the workers that would be needed for his son to complete the task.

The instructions and direction handed from father to son are beautiful.  He wanted to stress to his son the importance of building this temple.  The temple would be a place where the glory of God would rest, not merely a building built in honor of the LORD.  David expressed to his son that the temple was a place of repentance for all those who had broken the commandments of the law.  We could assuredly say that he wanted his son to honor God in all that he did from building the temple to justly ruling the kingdom.

Let's Reflect

1.  David explained to his son that God had told him he could not build the temple because he had shed much blood.  It wasn’t that David had been in the wrong by going to war and fighting all those battles, but God wanted His temple to be built out of peace and the land to be at rest.  According to verse 9, what had God promised would be true of Solomon’s kingdom?

2.  What was the second promise given to David regarding his son Solomon?

3.  According to verse 12, what did David pray would be the guiding force of his son’s kingdom?

4.  Being the king of a whole nation is a big enough task in and of itself, but David encouraged his son not to be fearful of an even greater task of building the temple.  What did he tell his son he had done to make the project less intimidating?

5.  David then turned to all the leaders of Israel and charged them to do what?

6.  According to verse 18 how could these great tasks be done?  How can we accomplish great tasks that God sets before us?

7.  What did David want them to bring into the temple once it was finally completed?
