No matter what age we are, we can find ourselves in a situation where we have forgotten about God and wonder why things have transpired the way they have. It seems we humans tend to do this especially when things have been going well for us. We stop relying on God, we stop asking for His help, and we start depending on self. King Asa fell into this way of thinking after so many years of trusting wholly in God alone. Things had gone so well for him, God had blessed his reign as the king of Judah. But in the 36th year of his reign when met with trouble, instead of turning to God for help he tried to devise his own plan and solution.
Let's Reflect
1. The king of the northern kingdom started building a fortified city that would entrap the people of Judah at Jerusalem. What solution did King Asa come up with to retaliate against King Baasha?
2. Did King Asa’s plan work?
3. God sent a seer or a prophet to remind Asa who he was supposed to be relying on. He reminded Asa of how capable God is to help in situations that seem so great. According to verse 8, what did the seer remind Asa of, that God had done for Judah in the past?
4. What does verse 9 teach you about some small or big situations you might be facing right now?
5. Sometimes we don’t want to hear the truth, especially when it means facing our own failures. What did Asa do to the seer?
6. It doesn’t seem that Asa ever repented of his pride. His remaining years on this earth were miserable. What caused the death of King Asa?
