II Chronicles Chapter 27

King Jotham was the successor to the throne after his father Uzziah had passed.  He was a man who followed in his father’s footsteps.  Most importantly he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD and he was a builder like his father had been.  There was one important distinction made between King Jotham and his father and that was that he did not enter the temple like his father had done.  Jotham had most likely known about his father’s prideful act of thinking he could serve as king and perform the acts of a priest as well.  So, it is noted in God’s Word that Jotham didn’t act like his father in that way, he learned from his father’s mistakes.

It is refreshing to read about a king who did not do anything to defy the living God.  We can assume that He relied on God by asking for his help continually and God blessed him for it.  Jotham’s name means “Jehovah-perfect.”  His name was fitting because he showed respect to God rather than becoming prideful as his father and so many other kings had done.
