This chapter is so lovely. It is wonderful to read about a king who was so deeply in love with God that he wanted all of Judah and even those still living in Israel to come to Jerusalem and worship God with a Passover Feast. Imagine hearing this proclamation letter read that came from the king of Judah inviting you to come to such an assembly. It is hard to believe that some people of Israel laughed and scoffed at the invitation, but they did. Those that did come from the northern kingdom of Israel were thoroughly blessed for being there.
The recognition of the Passover was a feast that all of Israel was to keep each year. Sadly, it had been abandoned while kings of the past chose to live their lives for themselves and led the people to do the same. Not recognizing the Passover had been a disgrace to both kingdoms.
Let's Reflect
1. Verse 6 gives us a clue what had happened to the people of Israel. What had happened?
2. Hezekiah’s proclamation written in the form of a letter invited the people to not only come to participate in the Passover Feast, but it also encouraged them to do what?
3. According to verse 9 what truth about God did Hezekiah teach and remind the people of?
4. While most of the people of the northern kingdom scorned and mocked them, there were a few that humbled themselves and decided to accept the invitation. Where were these people from?
5. We learn in verse 12 that God was in favor of this happening. What did God do for all the people who came to Jerusalem?
6. Verse 15 indicates that there were some priests and Levites who had not yet yielded their lives back to the one true God. What happened to them during this time?
7. Before eating the Passover lamb, the people were supposed to have consecrated themselves to God. To consecrate themselves meant to have humbled themselves, spent time in prayer and confessed their sins. But there were those who did not do that, so what did King Hezekiah do for them?
8. Coinciding with the Passover Feast was another feast. What was that feast called?
9. Verses 21 and 22 describe what God had wanted for His people all along, and King Hezekiah was instrumental in making it all happen. It was so wonderful for the people to be of one heart fellowshipping and worshipping God together that they decided to do what?
10. The joy and celebration that occurred during this time was compared to the time when King Solomon had finished building the temple and held a great celebration and dedication of the temple. This thing that King Hezekiah did was blessed by God and in turn the priests and the Levites stood up and did what for the people assembled?
