John again identifies himself as the elder of the church that he is writing to. And as their elder he is so happy to be hearing a good testimony of the life of Gaius. The name Gaius was a popular name in the Roman empire, so we don’t know if this is the same man mentioned other times in the New Testament. I wonder if Gaius was maybe someone that John had the privilege of personally leading to Christ. That is pure speculation, but I see that it really makes John happy to hear that this man is continuing to walk in the truth.
Let's Reflect
1. What does John call the believers of the church he is writing to?
2. In verses 5-8 what did John commend the brothers for doing?
3. When we support others who are spreading the truth of the gospel what does John say we are doing?
4. John talks about another man in this church who is causing problems. He thinks he is the top leader of the church and does not respect the authority of John. He says evil things about John and his brothers in the ministry. Even worse it sounds like he thinks it is up to him who can and cannot be a part of their church. What is this man’s name?
5. Demetrius, John’s assistant, has given a report to John about this church and John says what about the testimony he heard?
What will be your testimony? Who are you imitating these days? May I encourage you to be an imitator of those who are following hard after Jesus Christ.
