Please read: II Samuel 22 –
Bible scholars believe that the words of this song found in chapter 22 were a song written by David previously when he was much younger. But the song was placed here as a way to summarize his life. This song can also be found in Psalm 18 with a few variations to it. It truly is a beautiful summary of the way God worked throughout David’s life.
What I think you will find most beautiful, is David’s description of God. He viewed God as holy, supreme and powerful. Even the breath from God’s nostrils is described as being powerful. And David’s recognition of the great things he accomplished in his life as the king, at first glance may seem haughty, but when read with the whole of his thoughts you realize he is stating this in great gratitude, recognizing how awesome God is that he did all of these things through his servant David.
Let's Reflect
1. David starts the chapter giving God a name that he uses frequently. What name did he call his God that showed that David depended on God completely?
2. Verse 7 teaches us what about God?
3. Verses 8-16 describe God in a way that makes us think about His power. What strikes you in these verses the most about God?
4. According to verse 19, when all of his enemies were against David, who did he say was there for him?
5. In verses 21-25 David recognizes that God worked on his behalf because of his standing with God. What type of standing with God did David have?
6. In the previous chapter the people had called David “the lamp of Israel.” What did David call God? See verse 29.
7. There are several things to learn and meditate on in verse 31. What are those truths?
8. Verses 32-43 describe David’s victories in what season of his life?
9. In verses 44-46 David with a heart of gratitude describes the power that God allowed him to have as a king. And in verses 47-51 David attributes all the honor to God for all the things that have been accomplished. Recalling all that God has done in David’s life and all that God has done for us should cause us to do what? See verse 50.
