Please read: II Samuel 5 –
It finally happened; David was finally made king of all of Israel and Judah. He had waited patiently for God to bring about His purpose and plan. Now all 12 tribes were willing to recognize David as their king. He had already earned their respect as a great military leader, and they remembered what the LORD had said about him. “You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over Israel.” Ceremoniously they anointed David king over all Israel.
1 Chronicles 12:38-40 All these, men of war, arrayed in battle order, came to Hebron with a whole heart to make David king over all Israel. Likewise, all the rest of Israel were of a single mind to make David king. And they were there with David for three days, eating and drinking, for their brothers had made preparation for them. And also their relatives, from as far as Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, came bringing food on donkeys and on camels and on mules and on oxen, abundant provisions of flour, cakes of figs, clusters of raisins, and wine and oil, oxen and sheep, for there was joy in Israel.
David marked the start of his reign of a united kingdom with a very significant move. David moved his headquarters to Jerusalem, and he named the city “the city of David".
Let's Reflect
1. David was originally anointed by Samuel when he was about 15 years old. How old was he when he became king?
2. Jerusalem was a small town at the time, and it had never been conquered since the people had entered the promised land. Because Jerusalem sits on a hill it was easily defended. Its occupants, the Jebusites, made fun of David and his men coming to attempt to conquer the city. They thought they were so invincible that even the __________ and the __________ would ward them off.
3. David and his men did take the city by means of entering through a water shaft. Notice that the Bible calls the city by a different name. According to verse 7 what name is also attributed to Jerusalem or the city of David?
4. The strength of David’s leadership in Israel was also known in other parts of the world. What was the name of the king who gifted David with wood to build a palace?
5. According to verse 12 it states that David knew why God had made him king of Israel. What was the purpose?
6. Still David did something that was in direct disobedience to God. This disobedient act is recorded in verse 13. This behavior will later lead to great heartache for David. What did he do?
7. One group of people who were not happy to hear that David was king of Israel was the Philistines. What did David do before taking any action against the Philistines?
8. David’s victory over the Philistines was so great that he said, “The LORD has broken through my enemies before me like a breaking flood.” What did he name the place of victory?
9. On another occasion more Philistines planned an attack and David once again sought the heart of the LORD. He did not just assume that he would have victory, but He asked God for His direction. It was a good thing that he did because God led him to take a less dangerous route in the attack. And one of my favorite stories in the Bible is recorded here. God told David not to move in to attack the Philistines until He gave them what sign?
10. What did God promise David when they heard His sign?
