James Chapter 3

In this chapter James warns us that not just anybody should teach the Word of God. These teachers are held to a higher standard, and it is a great responsibility to take on the teaching or explaining of God’s Word. This is not meant to discourage you from teaching God’s Word if you feel called to do so. James wants to admonish those who would teach, to take it very seriously. In some cultures, men are regarded as more important if they give teachings in front of others. James wanted to be sure that these men understood that their teaching needed to be orchestrated by God rather than self.

By the same token it is true that we as listeners of the Word, need to be careful who we listen to. We want to be sure that the person we listen to lines up with the truths of the Bible. I think one of the greatest red flags a believer might find when visiting a new church, is a pastor or teacher who teaches without opening a Bible. If the preacher up front is a fantastic speaker, but you do not see him open the Bible and read from it ever, consider his teaching to be dangerous.

James went to great lengths to describe how damaging the tongue of a false teacher can be.

Let's Reflect

1. James talks about the fact that we are all going to stumble. The Greek word translated stumble does not imply a fatal fall, but something that trips us up and hinders our spiritual progress. The area where we are most likely to stumble is in the things we say. If a person does not stumble in their spoken word, it shows true spiritual maturity. But the tongue is difficult to control. What comparison does James make in verses 4-5 to talk about the power of the tongue?

2. What does James describe as the worst things about the human tongue?

3. Do you sometimes find yourself struggling with the very things that he describes regarding the tongue? Do you find yourself encouraging other people with your tongue and speaking evil about others?

4. He goes on to show that a teacher should have more than just great words, but he should have wisdom and understanding that comes from the Holy Spirit. According to verse 13 what will be evident in his life?

5. Where does biter jealousy and selfish ambition come from?

6. The man who has true wisdom from God – there will be fruit, evidence of it in his life and in his works. What words are used to describe the results of the teaching of someone who gets his wisdom and understanding from God? In other words, true wisdom is going to change lives.
