It is interesting to learn that Jesus prayed to the Father. It is even more interesting to learn what He said when He prayed. This chapter teaches us that Jesus prays for us the believers because we are His. And because we are His we also belong to the Father.
Let's Reflect
1. In what posture did Jesus pray?
2. Jesus knew that He was about to suffer a horrible death, but His concerns were not for Himself when He prayed. What did He pray would happen through His death?
“And herein he sets us an example: in all times of tribulation let us fall back upon our sonship, our adoption, and the fatherhood of our great God. To our Father let us go, for to whom else should a child so naturally fly?” [Spurgeon]
3. When we belong to Jesus we also belong to the Father and the beautiful gift that is given to the believer is what?
4. Every single thing that Jesus said and did while here on this earth was to point people to the Father. All those that the Father gave to Jesus, the believers, both past, present and future are all included in His beautiful gift of salvation. Because all believers have this same gift, Jesus prayed that all believers would be what? See verse 11.
5. The disciples were not perfect by any means, but Jesus recognized their faith. These people believed the words He spoke. Jesus declared in His prayer that He knew they believed in their hearts what important truth? See verse 8.
6. Jesus mentioned that He was not praying for the world, not because He doesn’t love the world, but at this time He wants to make an emphatic point that He is praying for these believers before Him because they will be the ones who spread the gospel. He prayed for their ministry that they would be fulfilled with joy. He prayed for the hatred that would be directed toward them. He prayed for their protection, and He also prayed that the Father would keep them from whom?
7. Jesus said He was praying not only for the believers that were with Him, but also for whom?
8. What did Jesus make known to the world that He wants us to benefit from?
