As we learn about the character of God by studying the life of Jesus while here on earth, we find that God tells us in His Word that Jesus knows all people. He knows each heart and whether or not they truly believe in Him as the Savior of the world. In this particular instance people witnessed His miracles, but He did not commit Himself to their simple belief of astonishment. He knew their heart. It is the same today. A person can get caught up in the emotional pull of a great sermon and desire to be a better person, but not fully commit themselves to Jesus. Jesus knows this and loves that person just the same. He waits patiently for them to fully repent of their sins and commit their heart to Him.
Let's Reflect
1. This chapter contains the first miracle of Jesus. What major celebration had He and His disciples been invited to where He was asked by His mother Mary to do this miracle?
2. Jesus called Mary a different name other than Mother now that He had started His ministry, and it was not a name of disrespect but of acknowledgment. What name did He call her?
3. When Jesus told Mary that His time had not yet come, the phrase generally refers to the time of His crucifixion. From this we learn that God had a specific appointed time that Jesus would die on the cross. But Mary had been studying her son and she knew who He truly was so when she told the servants to do whatever He said, she was asking Jesus to do what?
4. Where was this celebration being held?
5. When Jesus turned the water into wine, it was of what quality?
6. John then records the account of Jesus finding moneychangers in the temple. What emotion did Jesus display because of their sin?
7. When the Jews asked to see a sign what answer did He give them?
8. When did His disciples fully understand this answer that Jesus had spoken?
9. Why didn’t Jesus fully give more teachings and more of Himself to those who believed in Him according to verses 23-24?
