John Chapter 6

Because of the wonderful miracles Jesus performed for people with diseases and infirmities, a crowd followed Him wherever He went, and at times it presented a problem because Jesus needed time to be alone with His Father in prayer. At one point He had to get away from the crowd because He perceived they were going to rush in and make Him king. This seems like a great idea until we stop and realize that Jesus had come to die for the sins of the world. And God had a specific date in mind for which our Lord would give His life for you and for me.

Let's Reflect

1. As the crowd began closing in on Jesus and the twelve disciples, Jesus used this as a teaching moment for the twelve. Jesus looking at Philip, tested him, and asked “where can we buy bread to feed the people?” Philip did not pass the test of faith. How did he respond?

2. When Jesus had created food miraculously from five barley loaves and two fish, how did the people respond to the miracle?

3. To the crowd that followed Jesus, He seemed to mysteriously disappear and then reappeared on the other side of the sea. Had they been with the twelve disciples who were rowing boats across, they would have been even more surprised to see what?

4. Jesus understood their true motive for continuing to follow Him. What was it?

5. Despite their improper motive for following Him, Jesus had compassion on them. He fed them and offered them eternal life. When Jesus explained that the eternal food He was offering them came from the Father, He said that He would give them this eternal food and that God had done or will do what, as a part of Jesus’ gift of salvation? See verse 27.

6. When the people asked what good works they could do to obtain the gift of salvation, Jesus explained the work of God (salvation) was a gift. How can a person accept this gift?

7. What is the true bread of heaven that came down and gives life to the partaker?

8. What is the promise given to every believer in Jesus? See verse 40.

9. Jesus said that whosoever comes to Him will never hunger. What is Jesus referring to? In verses 56-58 it sounds like Jesus is talking about eating His flesh and drinking His blood. We know that He obviously did not mean that in a literal sense. What did He mean by this? See verse 51.

10. What do we learn about Jesus’ knowledge of His disciple Judas? See verses 64-65 and 70-71. Think about this for a moment and recognize the great love that Jesus has for all of us.
