In the previous chapter we learned that there were seven tribes of Israel who had not yet received their allotment of land. One of those tribes, Benjamin, was the first of the seven to receive their allotment. The allotments for the remaining six tribes are described in this chapter. Finally, all twelve tribes of Israel, including a plot of land for Joshua, would have their designated inheritance in the promised land. There was still much work that needed to be done, but Joshua made sure that at least the land allotments were secured through the casting of lots as prescribed by God. No tribe would be able to accuse Joshua nor the priest of unfairly dividing the land because they had relied on God to determine each choice.
Let's Reflect
1. What are the names of the six remaining tribes that received their allotment of land? See the first phrase of verses 1, 10, 17, 24, 32, and 40.
2. There is mention of one of the tribes doing the work of taking out the inhabitants within their allotment. This was the tribe of Dan. What people did they conquer?
3. According to verses 49-50 the people gave a portion of land to Joshua and his family. This portion was a city called Timnath-serah. In what tribe allotment was this portion of land located?
4. At what place were lots drawn to determine the allotments of land for the 7 remaining tribes of Israel?
5. What phrase ends the chapter declaring that God keeps His promises?
