Leviticus Chapter 15

As I read this passage, I thought about how difficult it must have been for Moses and Aaron to speak in front of the crowd of Israelites relaying these instructions.  Most of the instructions given relate to personal hygiene following sexual relations, but other instructions were given to deal with bodily discharges when one is not well.  God did not give these instructions because sexual relations are dirty or wrong.  He gave them for exactly the opposite reason.  He created sex to be enjoyed between one man and one woman within the boundary of a covenant marriage.  And in giving these instructions, unlike other cultures, the relationship between man and woman was to be respected and held in high esteem.

It also shows that there is a time and a place for sexual relations, and it was not to be added to worship in the tabernacle as other cultures did.  These two areas were to be kept separate in the life of the Israelite.  These laws of cleansing helped distinguish and to separate the gifts given to mankind and the holiness of God and His tabernacle.

Let's Reflect

1. When someone had bodily discharges because they were not feeling well, how thorough was the cleaning of his body and things he came in contact with?

2. In regard to sexual emissions, the husband and the wife were to bathe afterwards.  How long were they considered to be unclean?

3. How long was a woman considered unclean when having her menstrual cycle?  See verses 19 and 25.

4. Just how serious was it that a person be cleansed when entering the tabernacle according to verse 31?
