Leviticus Chapter 6

We often think of our sins as sins against other people, and they are.  But what God wants us to realize is that we are committing sins against Him.  It hurts the heart of God when we sin.  In the New Testament Paul described our sin as “grieving the Holy Spirit.”

Ephesians 2:4-5 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved

Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

There are a lot of verses in Ephesians between chapter 2 and chapter 4 that describe ways in which we can grieve the Holy Spirit by our sin.  We who belong to Him need to realize that God cares about how we live our life, the choices that we make and to whom we ultimately serve – ourselves or God.

Let's Reflect

1. In my English Standard Version, ESV Bible, this is described as a “breach of faith against the LORD.”  This breach of faith is a sin of deceiving whom?

2. This sin is another example of sin requiring a guilt offering to be brought for sacrifice.  If you are like me, I tend to think of telling a lie as a “small sin”, but it is not small in God’s eyes.  We know this because of what we read here in Leviticus.  This “small sin” required the blood sacrifice of what animal?

3. What did God promise when one came forward and admitted their guilt and asked for redemption?  See verse 7.

4. There was one step that had to be completed on the same day but before bringing his animal for sacrifice in the guilt offering.  The offender needed to make restitution to the offended one.  In addition to paying him back in full, the offender had to add what to his payment?

5. One of the responsibilities of the priests was to keep the fire always burning on the altar.  The fat of the animals burnt on the altar was to be a slow burn that lasted all night long.  This would mean that one of the priests would have to stay up to tend to the fire, adding pieces to be burned on the fire.  The priest would wear specific clothing to tend to the fire.  What did he carry from the fire outside the camp?

6. The priests were able to live by partaking of the food from some of these sacrifices.  What sacrifice were they not to eat because it had to be burnt up entirely?  This type of sacrifice was described in chapter 4.  The sacrifice was to cover for the trespass of a priest or for the nation of Israel as a whole.
