Mark Chapter 10

A father asking for a miracle from God for his child, said something that all of us can express when it comes to our faith. “I believe; help my unbelief.” We know that God is real but in different situations of life our trust in God often does not measure up.

We see this lack of trust played out in the lives of Jesus’ disciples. These men walked and talked with Jesus while He was on the earth. They saw Him perform astounding miracles and yet there was a lack of trust in the power of God. What would it take for the disciples to have a rock-solid trust in Jesus? It would be the ultimate thing that Jesus had been trying to tell them about.

God was going to raise Himself from the dead! Those that witnessed this miracle in their lifetime - were those who saw the kingdom of God arrive with power! This miracle they witnessed firsthand coupled with the power instilled in them on the day of Pentecost is what gave the apostles their strength, their rock-solid trust in God.

Let's Reflect

1. Jesus was teaching the people and again a crowd had gathered around Him, interested to hear His every word. The Pharisees were so jealous of His popularity. Mark describes an interaction they had with Jesus trying to get Him to say something that would contradict scriptures. What subject did they ask Him about?

2. What is the definition of a marriage according to Jesus?

3. People brought their little children to Jesus to have them touched by Him, blessed by Jesus. The disciples thought He would not want to be bothered with children. This upset Him a lot. He not only responded to the children, He opened His arms to wrap around them. Jesus responded with an important doctrinal truth about salvation what was it?

4. The rich young man that wanted “to be great” and follow Jesus certainly did not understand what Jesus had just taught about child like faith. Jesus knew what was most important to this man. What was it?

5. Just as Peter was about to point out that he and the 12 apostles had left everything to follow Jesus, Jesus answered him with a reminder of the reward that will be given to those who forsake all for the sake of the gospel. Peter may have been hoping for earthly rewards in a kingdom, but Jesus spoke of heavenly rewards. How great is the heavenly reward?

6. Jesus told His disciples a third time what was going to happen to Him. What details did Jesus give them about His death?

7. I read verse 35 and I am embarrassed for James and John, how about you? But that is human nature, isn’t it? Jesus did foretell that they would indeed drink of the same cup He had to drink from – they would endure a death of persecution and martyrdom. The other apostles were more than embarrassed for James and John. How did they feel towards them about their request?

8. Jesus told them He did not come to be served (as a normal king would expect), but He came to do what?

9. A blind man seemed to truly understand who Jesus was, he called him, “Jesus, Son of David.” What did Jesus say about the man as He restored his sight?
