Jesus warned us about religious leaders who like to walk around in long robes, and they like to get attention in the marketplace or where there are crowds of people. He warned us because these types of people love to use others to gain their own personal fame and riches.
The very ones who are supposed to point us to the truth are the ones who will lead us astray. That’s why it is so important for us to read the Word of God for ourselves and know what He taught us.
Let's Reflect
1. When Jesus spoke a parable about a vineyard owner who sent servants to reap his harvest, “they” thought He was talking about them. Who are “they”? See chapter 11:27
2. The last person that the vineyard owner sent was his own son. What did they do to him?
3. They were right Jesus was talking about them, but this was not the right time to murder Jesus, why?
4. They sent the Pharisees, the ones who knew the laws, and the Herodians (Jews who were Herod supporters) to try to trap Him. Did they trap Jesus with something He said incorrectly?
5. The Sadducees who did not believe in angels or the resurrection asked a question about heaven. How did Jesus respond to this religious group’s reasoning? See verse 24. Isn’t that exactly what is wrong with our culture today?
6. Jesus told the Sadducees plainly that they were wrong about the truth of resurrection. What did He tell them? See verse 27.
7. One of the scribes (men who copied the scriptures) asked a very important question of Jesus. What was it?
8. When the scribe agreed with what Jesus had said what was Jesus’ response to Him?
9. Think about the next statement of Jesus found in verses 35-37. Here Jesus refers to men who should have understood the scriptures better than anyone and yet they missed what important truth?
10. Who did Jesus point out to His disciples, as someone who was humble and had great understanding of what it means to honor the Lord?
