God knew that there would be times in the lives of the Israelite people when they would not be looking at the cloud or the fire. The cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night told them when God wanted them to move or to stay. In addition to the cloud God instructed two trumpets to be constructed from silver to create a sounding instrument that would draw the whole of Israel’s attention. These two trumpets became an important symbol of God calling His people to action.
Let's Reflect
1. Depending on how the trumpets were blown it signaled different things for the people. What did it mean if they heard only one of the trumpets sounding?
2. When they blew the trumpets as short alarm sounds rather than a long blast it indicated it was time for the people to do what?
3. What men were given the responsibility of blowing the trumpets?
4. The blowing of the trumpets when engaged in battle with an enemy was a reminder to the people of what?
5. For the first time in quite a while it was time for the Israelites to leave Mount Sinai. What time of the year did they leave?
6. Imagine how exciting this must have been. They were now organized and set out by companies and tribes. They knew that they were going to journey to the promised land and there was no threat of Egyptians to hamper their journey. Who carried the Tabernacle as they left Mount Sinai?
7. What did the Kohathites (a Levite tribe as well) carry in the procession?
8. There was a man who had been with them for some time, the father-in-law of Moses. He would have went back home to his homeland, but Moses wanted him to travel with them. What did he promise his father-in-law?
9. What did Moses pray when He saw the Ark of the Lord going before them on this journey?
10. And what did Moses pray when they were directed by God to stop moving?
