There were several things that proved to Israel that God was in their midst. Another reminder was the way in which He instructed them to set up camp going forward. From this point they will now make the Tabernacle (the Tent of Meeting) to be the center of the camp, and they would all set up their personal tents around the Tabernacle in a square formation.
Each tribe or clan was given instruction where they would set up their tents for their families according to how the Levite Tribes set up the Tabernacle. As in the previous chapter the assignments are given out according to the Tribe and the head of the tribe is named as well as the number of men able to go to war.
One thing we learn from all of this is that our God is a God of order. He wants things to be done in an orderly fashion and not haphazardly.
Let's Reflect
1. Which tribe is named first to camp on the east side of the Tabernacle? It is significant that this tribe is always named first. We will see this more as we get into more scripture.
2.The same order is followed when they moved the camp forward to the next destination. Where did the Levites and the Tabernacle travel in the concession?
3. Does the total number listed in verse 33 match the number of the total number of the census taken in Numbers 1:46?
4. We know that they camped according to the tribe (or clan) they belonged to and moved according to their clan. Do you get the sense that family is also important to God?
