Throughout the Bible we often see the narrative through the men and their sons, but God wanted us to know that the woman is just as important as the man. The first half of this chapter is a continuation of God’s instruction on how the new promised land would be divided amongst the tribes and the daughters of Zelophehad inquired of the Lord about their right to gain an inheritance of land when they had no father nor brothers. God showed how important these daughters were to Him at a time when the culture placed more favor on men. God gave special instructions for how those with sons would divide their land as an inheritance.
A special event took place in this chapter as well, in that God told Moses that he was soon going to pass away and that he should anoint his successor to lead the people of Israel. Before he would die, Moses was instructed to climb mount Abarim where he would be able to get sight of the promised land.
Let's Reflect
1. The daughters of Zelophehad showed their faith in God when they asked for an inheritance in the promised land. They handled their requests in a way that pleased God. What did they do correctly?
2. How did Moses react to their request correctly?
3. God reminded Moses why he was not permitted to enter the promised land. What was the reason?
4. What expression did God use that meant that Moses would pass away? This expression gives evidence of an eternal inheritance.
“The expression ‘gathered to your people’ describes the Hebrew concept of unity and identity with the faithful forefathers (Genesis 15:15, 25:8 35:29, 47:30), with whom they would rest and find peace.” [Cole]
5. Moses did not pick his successor, but God told him to choose Joshua to lead the people. According to verse 18 what was true of this man Joshua already, that would make him a good leader?
6. The chapter ends with a commissioning of Joshua with Moses laying his hands on him to dedicate him for the position. Who besides the priest Eleazar was in attendance at this dedication?
