As we look at this unique portion of scripture the most important thing that we must see is JESUS! If we miss the truth that this book was written by Jesus through John and that it is about Jesus and that it’s fulfilment will be completed by Jesus, then we have missed the whole meaning. Jesus told John to write this book for the seven churches found in Revelations and for us. John was also the writer of the gospel of John and I, II, and III John.
The word Revelation comes from the Greek word apokalupsis from which we get the word apocalypse. The word simply means “a revealing, an unveiling.” Therefore, in this book Jesus is revealing or unveiling Himself to us.
In the very first verse we learn that “these things must soon take place.” While we know that we must always be ready for the return of Jesus Christ, these words refer to the speed of how quickly the events of Revelations will unfold once they begin.
Let's Reflect
1. We would obviously want to read this book of Revelations to gain understanding of God’s future plans. What is another reason for reading it?
2. As John writes letters to the seven churches, He lets the reader know who the true author is. We see descriptions of the trinity in this passage. What words in verse 4 and verse 8 did John use to describe the eternality of God?
3. He also described the seven spirits who are before His throne. This is a reference to an Old Testament description of God the Holy Spirit. What are the seven characteristics of the Holy Spirit, characteristics that he has at all times in fulness and perfection?
Isaiah 11:1-2 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.
4. How is Jesus described and in verse 7 what will be the reaction of those who see Him?
5. Where was John when he encountered the Spirit of God and heard the voice of God?
6. The voice seemed to come from behind John and when he turned around, he saw seven what? And in the midst John saw the son of man or Jesus.
7. When John described what Jesus looked like how did he describe his eyes?
8. What did John see coming out of His mouth that would indicate Jesus was coming as judge?
9. What did John do when He realized He was seeing Jesus?
10. What special assignment did Jesus tell John He wanted him to do?
