Esther Chapter 6

You may be like King Ahasuerus in that you read a book when you cannot sleep. Unlike the king, you may not have a servant that will read to you. What was read to the king that night was ordained by God. The man named Mordecai had been recorded in a book of memorable deeds for revealing to the king a plot against the king’s life by two of his own servants. This was an act that was truly worth honoring, but the king learned that no honor had come Mordecai’s way. At the very same time that Haman was plotting to kill Mordecai, God saw to it that a king would cause Mordecai to receive great honors for his heroic actions.
In reading this story we can truly say and agree that God works in mysterious ways.
Let's Reflect
1. Haman happened to be in the court of the palace the next morning wanting to see the king regarding his plan to hang Mordecai on his newly built gallows. The king gave permission for Haman to come in and speak with him, but the king spoke first. What did the king say to Haman about what he wanted to do?
2. When the king began to describe the honors he wanted to bestow on a man, who did Haman think he was talking about?
3. The king had not asked for Haman’s creativity, but Haman gave the king a brilliant idea of how he could show honor to the man. What was Haman’s idea?
4. Can you imagine Haman’s face when the king agreed that this was a good way to honor the man he had in mind, but the man he wanted to honor was Mordecai? When Haman heard that name his jaw must have hit the floor.
5. After Mordecai was paraded around by Haman in the king’s robes, just exactly as Haman had suggested, what did Haman do?
6. What prediction did Haman’s own wife make about him when she learned that Mordecai was a Jew?
