Genesis Chapter 24

Everyone loves to hear a good love story, and this love story is the absolute best because it was completely orchestrated by God. We know that Abraham wanted the best for his son Isaac. It was clear that he did not want his on to take a wife from the Canaanite people whom they lived amongst. The Canaanites had many sinful practices, the worst of which was the worship of many gods. Abraham wanted to leave a legacy to his son of the faith in the one true God and he wanted his son to marry someone who believed in his God.

I honestly do not believe that Abraham expected God to act so quickly in finding a wife for his son. I think in his mind this was something likely to happen after he had passed away. But God had made a promise to Abraham and told him He would make of him a great nation and He would bless him. God was keeping His promise once again.

Let's Reflect

1. Who was asked to go to Abraham’s homeland to search for a bride for Isaac?

2. What legitimate concern did this man have regarding the request that would be made to the potential bride for Isaac?

3. Abraham could not promise that the requested bride would accept the invitation, but he could promise that the servant would be helped by whom?

4. The servant did not make this trip alone, several servants went with him. They went with lots of expensive jewelry and gifts. What animal did they ride on?

5. The servant wanted to please Abraham with a successful mission, that’s for sure, but he was seriously doubting the whole thing. He didn’t have that much faith, but He trusted the faith of his master, Abraham. What prayer did he pray to God asking for His help?

6. How exact was the answer to his prayer when Rebekah offered to give him a drink?

7. I believe that this was the one and only woman that the servant approached because God intervened and answered the prayer of Abraham. Did God help Abraham find a wife from his own people as he desired?

8. It seems that Isaac was not aware that his father had sent the servant to find him a wife because he was told the whole story in the field when they returned. Isaac had been taught faith in God by his father and knew this was - of God. What did he do in response?
