The family of Joseph had arrived in Egypt. They were to be settled into the land of Goshen with the blessing of the Pharoah. This is where they would survive the famine. This is where God would continue to bless the family of Jacob and his sons. They did not know it at the time, but this land would become home for a long, long time.
Let's Reflect
1. When the five brothers of Joseph were presented to the Pharoah, they told him that they were shepherds. Not quite following the protocol that they had been coached on. But the Pharaoh obviously took their meaning of shepherd to be keepers of livestock rather than sheep because of words Joseph had spoken earlier to the Pharaoh. The Pharaoh of Egypt welcomed them with open arms. What type of land did he want Joseph’s family to have?
2. The Pharoah also made a request of the brothers regarding his own cattle. What was his request?
3. Then the Pharoah got to meet Jacob, Joseph’s father. What question did he ask Jacob?
4. Before leaving the presence of the Pharoah what did Jacob do for him?
5. Just as Joseph had said would happen the famine continued and became more severe in both Canaan and Egypt. The people of Egypt had run out of money to buy food from the storehouses of Joseph, so what did Joseph say they should do to have food?
6. The next year the people came back to the governor (Joseph) needing more food. What did Joseph say they must sell to him to have their needed food?
7. Joseph provided the people with seeds to plant. What portion of their crops would they have to give back to the Pharoah when they harvested their crops? (They were going to be planting crops on land that now belonged to the Pharoah.)
8. What does verse 27 say regarding the family of Jacob? How did they fare during this famine?
9. Seventeen years have passed since the family of Jacob had settled in the land of Goshen. Jacob’s time to die had come. He had one request. What was it?
10. He made Joseph swear to him with a gesture of putting his hand on his thigh. What did Joseph do?
