We learned in the previous chapter that Jacob was now 147 years old. Now through the end of the book of Genesis we learn of the last days of this Old Testament patriarch. We can assume that he was 147 when he died because no other age is mentioned. Jacob knew that his last days were near, and he wanted to give final instructions and blessings over his family before he passed.
Let's Reflect
1. Joseph was called to the bedside of his dying father, and he brought with him his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim for his father to meet. Upon hearing that Joseph had entered his room, what did Jacob do?
2. What did Jacob tell Joseph about the land that God gave to him in Canaan?
3. Jacob told Joseph that he was going to, in a sense, adopt his two sons as his own so that he could pass the birthright blessings on to them. These blessings should have been given to his oldest sons Reuben and Simeon, but they had forfeited his greater patriarchal blessings when they murdered in seeking revenge for their sister Dinah. What did Jacob say in verse 6 regarding the two sons of Joseph?
4. In verse 7 Jacob talked about his grief when Joseph’s mother died giving birth to Benjamin. He shared with Joseph where Rachel was buried. This will become important information because it is where he wanted to be buried as well. What is the name of the place where she was buried?
5. Jacob eyes were dim but when he gained a bit of focus, he saw that Joseph had his two sons with him (this probably happened when Joseph entered the room). Jacob was so happy to meet Joseph’s sons. And what did Joseph do before his father? See verse 12.
6. Joseph brought his sons to where his father could reach them and pronounce a blessing over them. He made sure his oldest son was on the side that would be touched by his father’s right hand. (The right hand was a sign of power). But what did Jacob do when he blessed his grandsons?
7. In his blessing of the boys, what did Jacob say that God had been to him all his life?
8. Jacob prophesied over these two boys and what did he say about the younger son Ephraim? See verse 19.
9. Jacob told Joseph that his two son’s names would become a saying throughout the land of Israel. What was the saying?
10. What did Jacob tell Joseph about land he had obtained from the Amorites?
