The author of Hebrews is unknown. Most Bible scholars believe the author was Paul. The author knew Timothy (13:23) and He was not an eyewitness of Jesus. The writer of Hebrews writes from the perspective that He knows that Jesus is God, He is deity. And he wants to encourage believers to endure in their faith because we understand who Jesus is – the Son of God.
“Deity is not to be explained, but to be adored; and the Sonship of Christ is to be accepted as a truth of revelation, to be apprehended by faith, though it cannot be comprehended by the understanding.” – Spurgeon
God did not merely give us information about Himself, He gave us Himself. “He has spoken to us by His Son.” Hebrews 1:2
Let's Reflect
1. With what does God uphold the universe?
2. How did the writer of Hebrews describe Jesus deity with God the Father?
3. Throughout this first chapter the author speaks about angels. What various things does he teach us about angels?
4. He describes the rank of angels. What is their rank in relation to Jesus the Son?
5. What are angels instructed to do for us believers?
6. When God speaks about the Son, what is His rank?
7. How long will the kingdom of God last?
8. Re-read verses 1-2 and tell how it is that God speaks to us today?
As you read this first chapter, remember that it was originally written to the Jewish believers who were scared to express their faith because of the Romans who persecuted the believers as well as the Jewish religious sect. Be encouraged in your faith today knowing that God didn’t just give us information for a religion, but He gave us His Son.
