While we do not know for certain who wrote the book of Hebrews, we do need to see what the clear purpose of the writing was. The clear purpose of the book of Hebrews is to teach us that it is paramount to our faith that we exalt the glory of Jesus Christ above all else. When we are completely honest with ourselves, we can all attest to our complacency of our faith. We can do “all the things” like go to church every week, read our Bible daily, and pray and yet not really exalt His glory. We are not really getting to know Jesus on a personal level. We need to slow down and just bask in the greatness and the beauty that is Jesus!
For each and every believer that intimate time spent with Jesus, reflecting on His glory, will look a bit different for each person. I hope you will find that in reading and meditating on the truths in the book of Hebrews that you will catch a glimpse of Him and He will feel closer to you than ever before.
Let's Reflect
1. What is the danger for every believer who has heard the truth but has not really let the truth soak in?
2. The writer is making a comparison of the reliability of our salvation. He compares the Law of Moses that was delivered to Moses by angels (Deut. 33:2, Acts 7:53, Gal. 3:19). The Law was reliable to reveal man’s sin and there was retribution for it. In the same way that they trusted that the Law was from God, we can trust that our salvation is also from God. Do you sometimes struggle with doubts about your salvation? If so the remedy is contained in this chapter. What does verses 3 and 4 tell us that God did to prove that He truly provided salvation for us?
3. God did not give this earth for the angels to be in charge of, but He gave it to man. He put man in charge of taking care of the earth. Genesis 1:28. This was a great honor for mankind. God also sent His Son to earth for a brief time and the Bible says that Jesus was crowned with glory and honor. Jesus was here on this earth where He could show us that He could relate to our sufferings. What was His crowning glory according to verse 9?
4. Chapter one taught us that Jesus is God, He is full deity. Verse 10 tells us that Jesus who was and is fully God was involved with what? This source of life from the beginning became the source of life for us for eternity.
5. The world likes to say that there are many ways people can come to God (or heaven), but the Bible is very clear that we must be sanctified, and this sanctification only comes from one _____________. His name is Jesus.
6. This to me is the amazing part – that Jesus who was fully God and fully man is not ashamed to call us brothers! Can you believe it? Jesus thinks of you and me as His brother (or sister). In fact there is a quote from Psalms 22:22 that tells us that Jesus declares our name to the other brothers in the midst of the congregation. What else does He do in regard to us?
7. Why do we not have to fear death? Death is described as lifelong ______________.
8. Jesus had to be made like us, human, so that He could be the propitiation (payment) for our sins. Because Jesus experienced suffering and death and then rose again, what is He able to help us with?
