The priests that would have the privilege of serving in the temple were also organized by King David before his death. We know that the priestly line of the Levites came from the family of Aaron. Aaron had two sons, Eleazor and Ithamar, to whom the priestly line was passed to. And it was the son of Eleazor, Zadok. who helped David with the organization as well as Ahimelech, the son of Ithamar. I believe, that what is meant by Zadok and Ahimelech helped David with the organization of the priests, is that they helped round up their other brothers from these two families so that David could see just how many there were and would know how to organize a “chart” of when each of the brothers would serve.

1. According to verse 4 which family had more brothers?
2. There were 16 brothers of one family and 8 brothers of the other family for a total of 24. This meant there would be 24 assignments of service before the rotation would begin again. But David didn’t just set it up that the brothers served from one family and then the other family, nor did he set it up that it was a service of oldest to youngest. How did he organize who would serve in what order?
3. These brothers were considered the heads of the family lines and so as the family lines grew so did the number of sons serving on a particular day of the 24 courses. And later the length of the courses was changed from serving from one day to serving for a whole week. But as it started out, they served just for one day. According to verse 19 what did they do when it was their turn to serve?
4. In verses 20-31 talks about another type of organization that was patterned after the organization of the priests. The genealogy listed in these verses are the other sons of Amram, meaning they were not from the line of Aaron or Moses, but brothers or half-brothers. The names listed in these verses were Levites, but not descendants of Aaron or Moses. These men were to serve with other duties of the temple that would assist the priests. According to verse 31 what method did David use to organize their assignments of responsibility?
