The disciples knew that prayer was an integral part of their faith. No longer would they rely on a priest to intercede for them, but now they would pray directly to the Father. What better teacher could they have had to teach them how to pray than the Son of God, Jesus. He taught them to pray with a repentant heart. And He taught them to pray recognizing that apart from abiding with Him there would come testing, testing of their faith. He also taught them the importance of persistence. God wants to see our sincerity when we come to the throne of grace.
Let's Reflect
1. In the parable that Jesus taught about the need for the believer to be persistent in his or her prayer life; He told them that the heavenly Father will provide a helper for us. Who is that helper?
2. When Jesus was accused of casting out demons by the power of the devil, Jesus refuted their ridiculous words. In fact, He pointed them to the truth and told them that if He was casting out demons by the power of God, what did that actually mean? See verse 20.
3. The strong man in the world is Satan. We see it clearly that this world is being ruined by the great deceiver. But Jesus assured the people of what?
4. Verses 24-27 teach us an important truth about the unsaved. Sadly, the unsaved are vulnerable to the evil spirits of this world. Even if an unsaved person has been cleansed of an evil spirit, without the Holy Spirit dwelling inside them they are still left vulnerable. If they do not accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior, what can happen according to verse 26? We need to share the gospel with the lost.
5. Women are emotional creatures. This was exemplified in verse 27. The woman who shouted out meant well, she didn’t say anything wrong, but Jesus had a greater truth for her and the others to understand about Himself. What is the truth He taught?
6. Jesus condemned the people for always seeking a sign. They had the Messiah right in front of them and they still did not believe that He was the one. They would have a sign soon enough when out of the grave Jesus would arise to life. This miracle He compared to a miracle of the Old Testament. What miracle did Jesus refer to?
7. The believer’s life is a testament of that miracle of the power of life. We have been saved from death and have been given life. This is the good news. Jesus described this truth that we possess as what? See verse 33.
8. The Pharisees and other religious leaders of this world do not have this truth within them. They try to make themselves look good by their deeds and their outward appearances. Jesus said they were guilty of far worse things. What are they guilty of according to verse 52?
When you have the truth, believer, how can you keep quiet? How can you not share it with those around you who are deceived by the devil and evil men? The time is short and there are many who need to hear and see the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
