We all need to be reminded that the Lord could return at any moment, and we need to be ready for His coming. In the days left of this year, my prayer is that we be found ready with our lamps burning, ready for His return.
Let's Reflect
1. Jesus warned about hypocrites. Hypocrites will always despise those who are faithful to the Lord. But what is the worst thing that they could do to a faithful person that really is not so terrible considering where the faithful of God will go?
2. In what way did Jesus tell us that we are so valuable to God?
3. When we are persecuted for our faith who will give us the words to say to those who persecute us?
4. Jesus taught His followers that possessions and riches are not to be the worry of the believer. And when someone in the crowd wanted Him to settle a matter of a land dispute, He told Him that he was worrying about the wrong thing. He explained His answer with a parable. What was the parable about?
5. Verses 30 and 31 are the key to the whole chapter. The Father KNOWS! He knows our every need. He wants us to replace our worry about these things with a concern for the Kingdom of God. Where is your heart? Since you know that the Father knows of your needs, turn the worry over to Him and what will happen according to verse 32?
6. A trust in God’s provision builds generosity in the heart of a believer. What does God tell us about giving?
7. Since we know that Jesus could return at any moment, we are to be ready, be dressed and our lamps burning. We don’t want to be caught off guard when Jesus returns and are ashamed when Jesus is knocking at the door. This means a life of dedication to Him to always be ready for His return. What does verse 40 teach us about Jesus’ return?
8. Peter asked if this teaching was for all. Jesus’ reply shows that those who have been given so much in their years by the teaching of the Word – they carry more responsibility than say a person who just got saved yesterday and the Lord returns next week. We have a grave responsibility to our Master to do much with what He has given us. What did Jesus say would happen in families where some became devoted followers of Christ, and some rejected Him?
9. Jesus ended this teaching by saying that the little spats we care so much about are meaningless compared to the question of eternality of a person’s soul. When we get caught up in these little cares of this world and spend our time debating, what can happen to us?
