This letter was written by Paul to another co-worker in the ministry. It was probably written about the same time as the letter to Timothy. Titus, however, was left on the Island of Crete to lead the new believers and to form organized churches. You will find that there are similar words of encouragement written to Titus as what Paul wrote to Timothy. Titus was given this encouraging letter to help proclaim the truth amidst a growing concern of false teachers on the island.
Let's Reflect
1. The truth is that the elect (the believers) have knowledge of this truth – they have hope of eternal life. This hope is not a hope that is just wishful thinking, but it is a sure thing. According to verse 2 how do we know that our hope of eternal life is a sure thing?
2. When did God make this promise to us?
3. When did He reveal this promise to mankind?
4. Isn’t it ironic that the underlying promise of our faith, eternal life, is what is always the subject for debate and for false teaching. In your opinion what do you think most of the world thinks about their eternal destiny?
5. God knew this was going to be a problem for us to accept His simple gift and so He gifted men with the preaching of the gospel to establish churches where the truth would be proclaimed. The truth that Jesus died and rose again to save sinners that they might obtain eternal life. What essential godly characteristics should these men have to be effective leaders in the churches?
6. What must a good leader hold firm or most important?
7. What did Paul instruct Titus to do about the false teachers that were upsetting whole families?
8. As we look at the characteristics of a good leader for a church, we should recognize that these characteristics make a great list for any and all believers. What godly characteristics are you going to work on adopting in this new year?
