Titus Chapter 2

As we look at the godly advice taught by Paul, we have to remember that his teachings were inspired by the Holy Spirit to write, and that these words belong not only to the people of the Island of Crete but also to us today. There are some words in this chapter that believers might not like and would argue that Paul lived in a different time. While that is true, the principals that he taught us are still the Word of God and very much valid. This chapter gets to the heart of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus – for all men and all women.

Let's Reflect

1. When reading the godly qualities of an older man, what do you think Paul meant by sound in faith?

2. Older women are to have those same qualities that older men have, and he brings up additional qualities, what are they?

3. The controversy for some women is the teaching that women should work in their homes and be submissive to their own husbands. Let me confess right away that I work outside the home and pretty much always have. But I do think that if it weren’t for our culture and our economy, we would be better off if we women stayed at home. What we need to realize is what God wanted for us and our homes; He wanted us to nurture our families. Most of us have to work in our culture or our families would not survive – and God understands that too. Women need to discuss this with their spouse, spend time in prayer, and discern what is best for their family’s wellbeing. Who is assigned the task of helping young women to understand their responsibilities?

4. One area we cannot argue about is that God’s Word says we are to be kind and submissive to our husbands. Remember that Paul is teaching these things to the church to strengthen the church. What would happen to a growing church if all of the women decided that they were not going to be submissive to their husbands and not be submissive to the leadership of the church?

5. Paul also gives teaching for young men and for bondservants in this passage. In displaying godly characteristics, they are showing good faith, and they will adorn what?

6. Our life as a believer is going to look different than the life of an unbeliever. According to verses 11-13 why is the believer’s life different?
